Vilana

Vilana is one of Crete’s most widespread and traditional white grape varieties, with a long history in the island’s winemaking. Primarily cultivated in the Heraklion and Lasithi regions, Vilana has earned its reputation for producing fresh and aromatic wines that are ideal for the Cretan cuisine and the Mediterranean climate.

    Characteristics of the Variety

Vilana thrives in high-altitude areas, such as the mountainous and semi-mountainous regions of Crete. The island's climate, with its ample sunshine and warm temperatures, combined with well-drained soils, creates the perfect conditions for the variety’s development. The Vilana grapes are medium-sized, with a thin skin and a light golden-yellow colour.

    Characteristics of the Wine

Vilana wines are characterized by their pale lemon colour, often with greenish hues that reflect their freshness. Aromatically, they are noted for citrus notes, such as lemon and orange, as well as green apple, white flowers, and fresh herbs. On the palate, Vilana wines are light, with refreshing acidity and a clean, fruity taste, making them particularly pleasant and invigorating.

    Ageing and Style

Vilana primarily produces fresh wines designed for consumption within a few years of production to highlight their aromatic characteristics and vibrant acidity. However, in some cases, wines may undergo fermentation or ageing in oak barrels, which can add complexity and a richer texture, though these versions are less common.

    Pairing and Enjoyment

Vilana wines are ideal for pairing with fresh Cretan cuisine. They complement seafood, grilled fish, salads with olive oil, and light white meat dishes excellently. Their refreshing acidity and fruity flavour also make them perfect for traditional Cretan dishes such as wild greens and salads with wild herbs.

    Cultivation and Prospects

Vilana is a significant part of Cretan winemaking and continues to be successfully cultivated by many island winemakers. Despite being a traditional variety, modern Cretan winemaking aims to showcase Vilana's best qualities, using careful cultivation and winemaking techniques to produce high-quality wines.

With the increasing focus on quality and the revival of traditional varieties, Vilana has the potential to remain a cornerstone of Cretan winemaking, offering consumers fresh, aromatic wines that reflect the unique character of Crete’s land and Mediterranean culture.
